How to Summon & Beat Every BossHow to Fish — Bosses

Bosses in How to Fish come in three very different kinds, and most "I can't beat this" problems are actually "I can't trigger this" problems. This page covers every boss: how to summon it, how to beat it, and what to do with what it drops. If you're stuck, read the shared fight rules first — the escape timer trips up more players than any individual boss does.

How Boss Fights Work

Trigger

Every boss has a trigger, and a boss won't appear until you've done the setup. Story bosses need you to finish an NPC's quest first — the quest hands you the special bait or fish that summons the boss. Lure-summoned boss fish just need the matching Boss Lure on your rod. If a boss isn't on screen, the problem is almost always the trigger, not your damage.

The escape timer

Below every story boss's health bar is a white bar. That's an escape timer: if it empties before the boss dies, the boss vanishes and you have to summon it all over again. Keep steady pressure on during your damage windows instead of backing off to reload or eat.

The hand-in

When a story boss dies it drops a named item — a shell, a head, a fin — and that item has to go back to the NPC who gave the quest before the next island's coordinates appear on your radar. If you've killed a boss and the map hasn't changed, this hand-in is the first thing to check. The full quest chain is on the NPCs & Quests page.

NPCs & Quests

Preparation

Enter every boss fight fed, and bring the weapon you've actually invested in. Two achievements are directly tied to bosses: Easy (kill a boss within 10 seconds) and Handyman (land the final hit with bare hands) — both are covered on the Achievements page.

Achievements

The 5 Story Bosses

The ones you have to fight, in the order you fight them.

The Drip Lobster creature caught below the Lighthouse, claws raised
01

Spider Crab

LighthouseThe first boss, and a timing lesson more than a gear check.

How to trigger

Buy a Beer (12 coins) and give it to the Lighthouse Keeper. He drinks it and hands back an Empty Beer Can, which you cast as a lure to summon the crab.

How to beat

It repeatedly charges. Let it commit to the charge, dodge sideways, and it misses and goes dizzy — that's your window to hit it from behind two or three times, then back off. Don't stand in front trading blows, and don't put too much distance between you, or it starts jumping.

Drop & hand-in

The Spider Crab Shell → Lighthouse Keeper → boat keys.

The Giant Piranha boss leaping out of the grass, jaws wide open
02

Giant Piranha

ForestWhere you stop treating ranged damage as optional.

How to trigger

The Forest Lady's leech quest — gather 3 Leeches from the swamp, hand them in, and you get the Modified Leech, which summons it.

How to beat

It calls in smaller piranhas that cluster the arena. Keep most of your damage on the boss; clear the adds quickly but don't chase every one of them. Bring food and a ranged weapon you can keep on target.

Drop & hand-in

Whatever it drops → back to the Forest Lady → Island 3 coordinates.

The Pufferfish boss beached and bleeding coins as two players shoot it
03

Pufferfish

DesertTerrain wins this one more than a bigger gun.

How to trigger

The Tourist's endangered-species quest — catch a Needlefish, give it to him, and he gives you the Carrot, which summons it.

How to beat

It rolls at you like a bowling ball. Put a tree or solid terrain between you so it has to re-route, which opens a clean shooting window. Don't chase a nearly-dead Pufferfish out into the open — it can still end the run.

Drop & hand-in

Its fin → Tourist → Island 4 coordinates.

The Terrorizing Bird caught in the sniper scope against the sky
04

Terrorizing Bird

RocksThe giant bird the scared islanders keep talking about.

How to trigger

Catch a Tuna with the Professional Boss Lure, then use the Tuna to summon the bird.

How to beat

It hovers and dive-bombs. Fight from cover — a building or wall close enough to break its approach — and make it come to you instead of chasing it around the island. When its dangerous pass is over, step out and keep shooting.

Drop & hand-in

The Bird's Head → the islanders' NPC → Island 5 coordinates.

The whale final boss looming overhead at the Volcano island shore, lava glowing
05

Mutated Bowhead Whale

VolcanoThe final boss, and the end of the story.

How to trigger

The Scientist's experiment chain — catch a Bowhead Whale (Fish Bucket), carry it up the volcano, and throw it into the crater.

How to beat

It spits lava and moves hard after its landing attacks. Stay inside the volcano arena — if you pull the whale too far away it despawns and the fight resets. Read the attack, survive the landing, then re-engage; don't rush back to point-blank after it comes down.

Drop & hand-in

Its fin → Scientist → military boat key — that's the ending.

Lure-Summoned Boss Fish

These are caught like fish — put the matching Boss Lure on your rod in the right island's water. They're repeatable, so they're a reliable income and collection target.

Elite Encounters

Two extra elite creatures carry a full boss health bar:

Sunfish

An elite creature shown with a boss health bar in the official gameplay trailer. Its spawn location and trigger are not published.

Crab-Tastrophe

A giant crab with a boss health bar shown in the gameplay trailer. It may be the nameplate that appears over the Spider Crab; this isn't confirmed.

Boss Order & What's Mandatory

  1. Spider Crab
  2. Giant Piranha
  3. Pufferfish
  4. Terrorizing Bird
  5. Mutated Bowhead Whale

Only the five story bosses are mandatory, and you fight them in this fixed order. Everything else — the lure-summoned boss fish and the elites — is optional income, grill progress, or collection. If you're speedrunning, you skip all of it and go story boss to story boss (see Bean on the Achievements page).

FAQ

A boss disappeared mid-fight. What happened?

Either its escape timer (the white bar) ran out, or you pulled it out of its arena (the final whale resets if you leave the volcano). Re-summon it and fight inside the arena.

How do I summon a specific boss?

Each story boss needs the bait or fish from its NPC quest; each lure-summoned boss needs its matching Boss Lure. The trigger is listed in that boss's section above.

What do I do with the thing a boss drops?

Return it to the NPC who gave you the quest. That hand-in is what unlocks the next island's coordinates.

What counts as a mini-boss?

"Mini-boss" appears only in the Competitive eating achievement (eat one). The likely candidates are the repeatable lure bosses or the elite encounters.

How do I get Easy or Handyman?

Easy is killing any boss within 10 seconds — front-load damage (dynamite helps). Handyman is landing the final blow on the last boss with bare hands — fight normally, then unequip your weapon and punch the last hit.
